Topazes have been related to desire since the beginning of times. Topaz comes from the Greek Tópadzos, meaning "to search". It is also the name of an island in the Red Sea that was always wrapped in fog, thus misterious and difficult to find. Yet another source has it that the word originated in Sanskrit tapas, which translates into heat, fire, passion.
